President Abdelmadjid Tebboune, supreme commander of the armed forces and minister of national defence, decided on Monday to send units of the People's National Army to the Republic of Niger. The presidency said in a statement that the decision came at the request of the Nigerien authorities and under the constitution, particularly Articles 30 and 91. The stated aim is to protect the energy and economic interests the two countries share.12
Algeria's Council of the Nation, the upper chamber of parliament, then voted unanimously to approve the deployment. The approval was reported on Thursday, three days after the presidential decision.345
The deployment is framed as protection for oil installations and shared energy interests. The army units involved are from the People's National Army.678
Political parties and national organisations backed the decision, calling it a strategic step to protect the country's higher interests and strengthen security in the region. The National Liberation Front party praised the activation of Article 91 of the constitution, which allows army units to be sent beyond the borders.9
