Swedish parties edge toward extra election as government talks stall 49 days after vote
First published Mon, Nov 2
Sweden's parties are still trying to settle who will govern 49 days after the election, with the Social Democrats under Magdalena Andersson at the centre of the deadlock. Christian Democrat Adaktusson said an extra election is a "reasonable consequence" of the impasse. The Centre Party's youth wing, Cuf, called the Social Democrats' strategy "rather bad", and Centre supporters reacted with surprise and anger to the speaker's announcement, one calling it "insane".456
Political scientists expect the parties to give way only at the last moment, at the point of a snap election. One commentator argued voters are not nearly as locked in as the Centre Party, and another said the wrangling over government power breeds contempt for politicians.789
