Vietnam government sets 10 percent GDP growth target for 2027 as weak officials face replacement
First published Sat, Oct 17
The government has set a target of GDP growth of 10 percent or more for 2027, a goal that outlets describe as posing a major challenge. Officials have paired the target with a demand to select the right breakthrough points and improve enforcement capacity to reach double-digit growth.123
The government has ordered that weak or underperforming officials be replaced immediately in service of the growth target. The push comes as nearly half a million billion dong in capital remains unallocated, still waiting for projects to absorb it.45
Growth has run high but is not yet considered firm, and Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi, Hai Phong and Dong Nai are projected to fall short of their targets. The shortfalls in these major economic centers sit against the national goal of 10 percent or more.6
The government's growth push also calls for raising the economy's capacity for self-reliance by choosing the correct breakthrough stages. The 10 percent target and the enforcement measures are being presented together as the core of the plan.72
