Prime Minister Anutin ordered the armed forces to raise readiness along the Thai-Myanmar border and stressed the need to protect sovereignty while avoiding clashes. The government said it had tightened controls on the frontier and suspended eased rules on imports and exports, while denying that all border crossings had been closed and saying the measures were meant to protect the public.123
The Royal Thai Air Force said it sent F-16s on patrol over Mae Sot and asked residents not to panic if they hear loud aircraft noise. Fighting across the border has already affected the Thai side, and the prime minister said Thailand had notified Myanmar of the impact and that Thailand is not a party to the conflict.43
Defence Minister Anutin said the chief of the defence forces called his Myanmar counterpart directly to discuss concerns over the border clashes. The government also ordered agencies to prepare contingency plans at every level for the frontier.51
In Mae Samaeb, shops closed and boats stopped running on the Salween River as people fled fighting in Myanmar, where air strikes on Karen areas were felt across the border. Myanmar's military carried out air strikes on four towns in Rakhine State, killing at least 15 people, including a newborn, according to Manager Online.67
Wanwichit recalled that a former army chief had said he worried more about the western border than the eastern one. The remarks were cited as the government weighed its response to the fighting.8
